An ancient architectural arch within the hotel is a link to its monastic past, when a small group of canons would house there on visits to the resident prior from the Augustan order. The building later became a private home and, in 1802, to the grandfather of famous naturalist Charles Darwin - the physician and poet Erasmus Darwin.
