GUERNSEY'S ONLY FIVE-STAR HOTEL: VENUE PROFILE

Written by: Calder - 28th June 2019

We'd like to introduce you to the only five-star hotel on Guernsey - The Old Government House Hotel & Spa at St Peter Port. With July rates extended to our clients through our special partnership, this is the time to consider meeting at a seafront location full of character.

The word government might conjure an atmosphere of intensity, pressure and gravity. Certainly, the imposing historic building and grand interior will encourage you to focus and get the job done; one look out at the boats in the harbour and over the expansive seascape and heaviness will be inclined to fly away as wellbeing settles in upon proceedings.

This hotel is situated in the heart of St Peter Port - the island's capital - which is a compact destination but renowned for its quirky and charming skyline. Wander up one of the cobbled side streets and you'll arrive at The Old Government House Hotel & Spa, sitting proudly on the hill with panoramic sea views. Once entered, visitors will sense immediately the pride here in traditional hospitality values; one reason, I expect, that this is an award-winning establishment - voted Number 3 Hotel In The UK, for instance, in 2017 by Condé Nast Traveler in their Readers' Choice Awards.

Home Of Memorable Meetings and Events

The building dates back to 1796 and was the official Governor's residence for Geurnsey, Alderney, Herm and Sark until 1842. This heritage births a proud claim here: "as The Governor's official residence, this venue has been hosting memorable events, lavish receptions and important meetings since the time of the French Revolution - so whatever the occasion the OGH is more than capable of rising to it."

This is the island's premier hospitality venue and the dedicated, experienced team manage everything from state banquets to political summits.

Regency Room

I've compiled a quick fact-file below of what this venue offers for business gatherings and for those that need to blend business with a social or leisure element:

Conference Rooms: 7 for up to 200 delegates in any desired configuration, including Boardroom, Colborne Room, Douglas & Dalrymple, Doyle Room, Regency Room.

Doyle Room for Dinner

The Alderney

Al Fresco: a noteworthy feature of this venue is the enclosed garden and elevated patio spaces which lend perfectly to drinks receptions and less formal gatherings at the close of a busy day perhaps. These spaces boast splendid outlooks over St Peter Port. Imagine, for instance, how delightful would afternoon tea be here with such vistas!

The Olive Grove

Further Dining:

* The Curry Room (rich, deep tones of décor and fine Indian cuisine recipes transport you to another realm).

* The Brasserie Restaurant

* Two classy bars, with light dining options and appealing outlooks - a pleasant space in which to catch your thoughts between sessions or in the evening.

Commanding Colonial Style Rooms

* 62 rooms and suites in-keeping with the building's historic elegance and charm

* individually designed rooms, some with sweeping views of St Peter Port and across to Herm and Sark

* For those without laptops, internet may be accessed through room TV

Special Touches

Guernsey, with its beaches and un-hurried pace, is just naturally beneficial for inner calm. Wellbeing is a particular speciality here at OGH with the outdoor pool and rest area, health club, personal trainers, the secluded sanctuary of the spa and its myriad relaxation treatments.

As with all locations within the Red Carnation Hotels portfolio, sustainability is woven into the fabric of the place. A Green Team here is dedicated to global environmental process through commitment to local community ventures and heritage. Annually, the team organises volunteer beach-cleaning days on the island. Single-use plastic is being combatted in the bars here through biodegradable alternatives.

July is the month to trial the benefits of a seafront location on the team by arranging a meeting here and taking advantage of the special reduced room hire rates. If the boats, the sea, the cobbled hills and green spaces of island life leave a lasting impression and you want to return for a larger conference or social event, there's no challenge too taxing when we work alongside a team with such a time-honoured pedigree.
